The Rotary Club of Minden sponsored two exceptional high school students to the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) camp which was held at Maranatha Camp this past July.
RYLA is an intensive leadership experience organized by Rotary clubs around the world in which high school sophomores and juniors can develop leadership skills while having fun and making connections.
Danica Schoone and Natali Uribe, students at Minden High School, applied to attend the camp after hearing a presentation at their school by Marse McCann-Carpenter, who was the 2023/2024 president of the Rotary Club of Minden. Both girls agree that was one of the best decisions they have ever made.
During their four-day stay at camp Danica and Natali, along with 80 other young people from Nebraska and South Dakota, participated in activities and events that were designed to enhance their leadership skills as well as provide an opportunity to explore their strengths and opportunities for personal growth. Danica especially liked the waterfront day activities and Natali enjoyed times set aside for deep conversations. A favorite activity of both girls was etiquette night where they learned things like which fork to use for what and the “D and B” trick.
Both girls said they valued the opportunity to meet new people, test themselves and move beyond their comfort zones. When asked if they would recommend RYLA to other young people they emphatically said yes. They said it is a wonderful opportunity to build friendships, meet new people and gain leadership skills. Natali is hoping to return to RYLA camp as a counselor.
Young people from Kearney County who are interested in finding out more about RYLA can contact Marse McCann-Carpenter by phone or text message at 402-432-4841.
