Dictionaries for Third Graders
Empowering Young Minds. Building Foundations for Lifelong Learning.
For generations, the Rotary Club of Minden has invested in the future by supporting education at its earliest and most formative stages. Each year, Rotarians present every third-grade student in Kearney County with an age-appropriate dictionary — a simple gift with lasting impact.
More than just a book, each dictionary represents an opportunity. Teachers incorporate the dictionaries directly into classroom instruction, guiding students in how to look up words, understand definitions, and build confidence in reading and writing. In a world increasingly shaped by digital tools, this hands-on resource reinforces foundational literacy skills and encourages curiosity, independence, and academic growth.
This project reflects the Minden Rotary Club’s century-long commitment to thoughtful, measurable service. By ensuring that every third grader receives a dictionary, the club demonstrates its trustworthy stewardship of resources and its belief that equitable access to educational tools strengthens the entire community. The consistency of this annual effort — year after year — speaks to Rotary’s steady leadership and dedication to “Service Above Self.”
At the same time, the initiative remains modern in its relevance. Strong literacy skills remain essential for success in school, career, and civic life. By equipping students with tools that support comprehension and vocabulary development, Rotary invests not only in academic achievement but in the confidence and capability of the next generation.
The Dictionaries for Third Graders program is also deeply inviting. It offers members an opportunity to connect directly with students and educators, to witness firsthand the excitement of receiving a new book, and to experience the joy of service in action. It is a visible reminder that small, consistent acts of generosity can shape futures in meaningful ways.
