The Rotary Club of Minden will host their “End Polio with a Purple Pinky” table at the Minden/Cozad football game on October 20, 2023 in recognition of upcoming World Polio Day (October 24th).

The purpose of the table is to raise money to donate to Rotary International’s efforts to eradicate polio across the globe. Rotary is the founding partner of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, which has resulted in a 99.9% reduction of polio cases worldwide by since Rotary’s first project in the Philippines in 1979.

“Rotary sends volunteers to every corner of the planet,” said Marse McCann-Carpenter. “These volunteers have administered polio vaccines to more than 3 billion children in 122 countries. A temporary purple stain is applied to each child’s pinky finger to show that the child has received the vaccine.”

The Rotary Club of Minden will be accepting donations from students and game attendees, which will then be sent to Rotary International to purchase polio vaccines. “Each person who donates will get a temporary ‘purple pinky’ to signify their support of this important project,” said McCann-Carpenter. “All donations are welcome. The Gates Foundation will donate $2.00 for every $1.00 raised by Rotary. Vaccines cost about $1.00 each, so when you donate a dollar you are making it possible for three children to receive vaccines.”

Today, polio remains endemic only in Afghanistan and Pakistan, but Rotary International estimates that if all eradication efforts stopped today, within 10 years, polio could paralyze as many as 200,000 children each year.

The Rotary Club of Minden has been serving the local community and participating in Rotary International projects since 1926. The club meets at noon on the second and fourth Thursday of every month at the Minden Opera House. Visit mindenrotary.com for more information about the Rotary Club of Minden.
